to create such an accurate 3D self-portrait, the bellus3D face camera includes high-end technologies that, once combined, are able to scan 500, 000 different reference points off the user’s face — which are later reconstructed into a full virtual face model. even more, the device includes infrared and color sensors alongside infrared laser projectors and circular LED light attached to the camera.

for the meantime, the proposed device is conceived for android smartphones as an ‘add’on’ camera that can be plugged into a USB port for charging and streaming data unto the mobile phone to create the 3D portraits. once the calibration is set at the first trial the device will automatically adjust to the smartphone’s camera after every attempt to capture a 3D ‘selfie’. the product is set to be released in 2017 in limited numbers, at expected to be sold at less than 1,000 dollars.
